Prachanda to lead govt for two years, followed by Oli
Kathmandu : Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli have reached an agreement to divide the remaining tenure of the government evenly.
The agreement comes following the dissolution of the alliance with the Nepali Congress and the formation of a new coalition.
A CPN-UML leader said, “Prachanda and Oli have agreed to lead the government evenly.”
Dahal assumed the role of Prime Minister with CPN-UML’s backing in December 2022.
Initially slated for a two-and-a-half-year term, the agreement was disrupted when UML withdrew from the government after Prachanda shifted allegiance to the Nepali Congress.
A year later, UML decided to revive the previous alliance with Prachanda and rejoin the government.
With this new agreement between Prachanda and Oli, the possibility of Madhav Kumar Nepal assuming the Prime Ministership has been ruled out.
Although the Maoists are open to retaining the political parties in the Socialist Front in the alliance, they are not inclined to concede the prime ministerial position.
UML Chairman Oli has also expressed openness to forming an alliance with the CPN Unified Socialist.
A CPN Maoist Center leader said that the agreement to allocate the prime ministership to Madhav Nepal was annulled when the alliance with the Nepali Congress came to an end.
“We’ve embarked on a new trajectory, and it is anticipated that Madhav Nepal will remain with us on this journey of left-wing consolidation,” the leader stated.
It should be noted that during the 2079 elections, an arrangement was made within the former coalition wherein Prachanda would lead the government for two years, followed by Madhav Kumar Nepal for one year, and Sher Bahadur Deuba for two years.
