Rabi Lamichhane Shifted to Nakkhu Jail as Legal Storm Intensifies

Staff Reporter Aug 18, 2025

Kathmandu, August 18, 2025 – Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman and former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane has been transferred from Rupandehi District Prison to Nakkhu Jail in Lalitpur, intensifying public attention on his ongoing legal battle.

Lamichhane, who has been in judicial custody since April 4, 2025, faces allegations tied to a cooperative fraud case involving the Supreme Cooperative in Butwal. His transfer was reportedly requested citing security concerns and the need for better facilities.

High-Profile Transfer

The Department of Prison Management confirmed the transfer, executed on August 15, 2025. Lamichhane was flown from Bhairahawa to Kathmandu and moved to Nakkhu Jail via an alternative route, bypassing the airport to avoid large gatherings of supporters. At Nakkhu, he has been placed in a separate cell, with authorities emphasizing no special privileges are being given.

Judicial Proceedings Continue

Lamichhane’s team submitted a bank guarantee in a bid for release, but the Rupandehi District Court rejected the request, citing the risk of evidence tampering and the importance of public trust in the judiciary. The Supreme Court had earlier upheld the decision to keep him in custody.

Prison Conditions Under Scrutiny

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) inspected Lamichhane’s cell, highlighting overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and sealed windows. The NHRC has recommended improvements to meet basic human rights standards.

Political Fallout

Lamichhane’s transfer has sparked debate across Nepal. Supporters claim the move is politically motivated, while critics argue it reflects the legal challenges faced by high-profile leaders. The RSP has called for transparency and fairness in the judicial process.

As the case unfolds, all eyes remain on Rabi Lamichhane, whose next legal moves could shape both his political career and Nepal’s political landscape.
