Indra Bahadur Baniya Appointed as New Chief Minister of Bagmati Province

Kathmandu, July 22, 2025 (Shrawan 6, 2082) — Senior Nepali Congress leader Indra Bahadur Baniya has been appointed as the sixth Chief Minister of Bagmati Province, following a power-sharing agreement between the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML. Provincial Head Deepak Prasad Devkota administered the oath of office and secrecy to Baniya today.

Political Background

Baniya secured the chief minister with 64 votes in the 110-member provincial assembly, with support from 37 Nepali Congress and 27 UML members. He began his political career through the Nepal Student Union (NSU) in 1987 and is a long-time political figure representing Makwanpur–2 (B). He has previously served as Minister of State for multiple ministries, including Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, and Home Affairs.

Power-Sharing Deal

After weeks of political deadlock, Baniya managed to form a coalition government with a mutual agreement between the Congress and UML, reportedly agreeing to rotate the Chief Minister’s post — 8 months under Congress leadership, followed by UML’s turn.
